Fun Atmosphere, Good Pizza

Pizza King of Tipton
The Washburn

If you're from Indiana, the odds are fairly strong that you're at least familiar with Pizza King. Started in Muncie in 1958, Pizza King is an Indiana-based chain with approximately 45 locations. Pizza King has a strong focus in the East-Central Indiana area and they especially take a shine to smaller towns/cities and more rural areas. While there is some variation from location to location, generally you get a fairly similar pizza with fresh, never frozen, toppings and toppings that go to the edge.

This location in Tipton is located across the corner from Tipton County Courthouse. It's in a fairly nondescript building that looks like nothing fancy. As a wheelchair user, I'll always mention accessibility in my reviews and this location has a couple accessible parking spots along with a concrete ramp that goes up to the entrance.

As you enter, you're in a front room that has a few tables but mostly serves as the carryout area. To the right, there's a video game and a fairly narrow hallway that leads to the back. There are two rooms that serve as main dining areas. I will note that this video game somewhat serves as an obstacle for accessibility. I was able to make it, however, the wheelchair definitely touched the game. I think a larger wheelchair would have issues.

The back dining rooms have a wonderfully fun vibe. There's a retro vibe with quite a bit of 50's themed decor including several items related to Indiana native James Dean. The servers all appeared to be either high school students or perhaps college students. They were friendly and helpful and our server was great. We had several people in our party and she was spot-on all night. We ordered several items, but the pizza focused on The Washburn and a Pepperoni/Sausage pizza.

In case you're wondering, The Washburn includes baked ham, extra pepperoni, extra mozzarella and provolone cheese, sausage, and BBQ sauce. I'm not usually very adventurous with pizza - give me a pepperoni or sausage and I'm happy. However, I really enjoyed the Washburn with plentiful toppings and a nice weaving together of flavors. I would easily order it again. I also enjoyed the pepperoni and sausage.

We also ordered our drinks and one person ordered a salad. No one left unhappy. They have a nice menu with multiple pizza options, starters, salads, pasta, deli sandwiches, and more. During the week, they also offer a lunch special for $9.35 from 11am-2pm that includes four different options all with a medium drink.

While I'm not sure I'd call this a premium pizza experience, I really enjoyed it. Pizza King seems to be a place that people either love or hate. If you already know you don't like it, I doubt this location will change your mind. However, I really loved the atmosphere, the service was good, and the prices were fair. While this isn't a destination pizza joint, I'd easily return when I'm back in Tipton.
